Micky van de Ven found the net twice as Tottenham prolonged their unbeaten run in away games in the top division and handed the Toffees their initial loss at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

The Toffees were undefeated in their five previous fixtures at their recently opened stadium at the dockside location, having departed Goodison Park behind after more than a century at the end of last season.

But Tottenham's leader the Dutchman pounced twice from set-pieces in the first half to put their impressive record at jeopardy, and they were failed to turn it around before Pape Matar Sarr - assisted by ex-Everton forward Richarlison - headed home a third to seal the victory.

The Everton defender believed he had levelled the tally five minutes after the defender's first goal, directing a bullet header past the Spurs keeper from an Everton corner.

Beto, meanwhile, missed a number of opportunities, while the Italian goalkeeper made a succession of fine stops to ensure the London club went five matches on the road without defeat in the Premier League.

But the video assistant referee intervened, instructing Craig Pawson to check the goal on the screen and the official decided that the winger and the attacker were in offside positions and had impeded with the Spurs keeper.

The win elevates the manager's team up to third in the division, five points off north London rivals and table-toppers Arsenal.

Everton remain 14th and sit six points ahead of the drop zone.

Tottenham analysis: The defender excels in role at both ends of pitch

After a drab weekday display in the Champions League against Monaco, where they managed a only attempts on goal, Frank opted for Randal Kolo Muani up front instead of former Toffees player the Brazilian.

The summer signing was unable to influence the game before being substituted for the substitute after an hour on the field, but it emerged he proved unnecessary in the end.

Defender Van de Ven transformed into an offensive threat to be reckoned with.

Tottenham's opening strike came from a well-worked corner routine, with the midfielder directing the ball toward the face of goal for an free Van de Ven to head home.

And the captain - stepping up as captain in Cristian Romero's unavailability - notched his next goal in first-half stoppage time as he outjumped Jordan Pickford to nod in.

Van de Ven was just as impressive in defence, partnering well with Kevin Danso as the pair handled excellently with the numerous deliveries sent their way by the opposition.

Toffees breakdown: Toffees lacking finishing touch

Everton's new home had been a happy hunting ground, but it seems the freshness may have faded slightly and fans headed to the exits after Sarr's final goal for Tottenham.

The break in the team's unbeaten home run will not be a major concern for David Moyes, but their striker situation are.

Beto and the other striker - the Toffees' pair of established strikers - had netted just one league goal between them before the weekend's match.

And they were failed to contribute to that poor record on a wet and gloomy evening on Merseyside.

Beto's performance was epitomized when he chose to bicycle-kick a golden opportunity from close range, even with having room and opportunity to readjust for a more conventional shot that would have tested the keeper.

Barry, as well, was unable to influence the game after coming on for the starter in the 65th minute.

It wasn't for a lack of opportunity. Most of Everton's offensive moves came through Grealish and Ndiaye, who relentlessly delivered dangerous balls into the Tottenham penalty area.

The Toffees: Moyes' men travel to Sunderland in the Premier League on Monday, 3 November at 20:00 GMT.

Spurs: The London club travel to St James' Park on Wednesday, 29 October for their next round League Cup tie against the Magpies.
